Wednesday, February 21, 2007 : Mistake!
|
By Chops
|

Alas, so this site is finally back up in all it's teal glory.
You might be wondering, "What the hell happened?"
Here's the short and skinny:
I was working on my server on a script for a client that did the simple task of deleting a directory and rebuilding it.
My script needed a simple command to delete the directory and it's contents:
rm -fr www
But I made the grave mistake of typing:
rm -fr /www
This mistake cost me all my code on here and poopinashoe.com. To recover the data, I unmounted the partition, and then made an iso of it, then wrote a perl script to scan the iso for any occurances of <? or ?> and then grab the next 2000 lines (to ensure that I got everything).
From there it was a matter of sifting through thousands of lines code and garbage to find the files, save the chunks, and rename them to the proper file.
Unfortunately, at the time, the poopinashoe.com code was similar but still different than the gummlanparty.net code, and in the end, gulp wasn't terribly busy, but we NEEDED the code for poopinashoe, so I never recovered the gummlanparty code.
Months go by, and history became legend, legend became myth, and for almost a full year, the data from gummlanparty sat, unused, and intact...all but forgotten.
November of 06 I decided to begin the recovery process, and proceeded to look for the database for gummlanparty. Alas, I had switched servers, and had formatted the one machine where I kept the data in-tact, forgetting that I had not backed it up.
...all seemed lost.
I scoured everything I had, every hard drive looking for any hint of a copy of the database, finding at best a copy of the database from 2003, until, by chance, I had made a single copy of the data and placed it in a buried directory on the desktop of a machine I no longer used, my old laptop.
The data was in-tact, and I restored it to it's proper place where it would get backed up nightly. Things seemed well in the world, but I wasn't about to re-write gummlanparty.net just for the 5 people that might come to the site, so I sat on the data again.
I began actively working on ThreadTags.com, the site that hosts this now, a derivative of DKPSystem.com, which is itself a derivative of the gummlanparty codebase, so the circle is complete:
ThreadTags.com is launched. GummLANParty.net is back, new and improved, and all is well with the world.

What's been done so far:
History Page is just HTML so that's easily done.
News Section and Newsletters are complete, and fully imported.
LAN Parties Table has been imported but the interface is not complete.
I've started to look into the Forum importing process, but probably won't look at that tonight. Tonight will be bringing in the Awards and Computer Statistics, and maybe if I have time, the Pictures section.
After that point, I'll do some generic Importing of the old Forum, and Take down the Server for the ultimate formatting.
Almost there...and Quake server, Here we come.

3. I moved the "Newest Members" from the right side to the top. I also moved the Survey from the upper right to the upper left. This is To make it more friendly to lesser resolutions.

After close to a year and a half, my interest in composition is beginning to over-power my body and mind. I feel as though I HAFTA write a MIDI or two or I will just explode in to little tiny pieces.
Many of you know I write music (or at least wrote music, especially proficiently in High School), and I favor a neo-classical style, with gamelike features. I want to write again. To hear my Best works, head on over to : http://www.gumm.8k.com
Surprisingly, I've had over 6000 hits in the last few years, despite not having ever advertised.
So if anyone has any good SoundFonts, hook me up, otherwise I might by a $60 Soundfont set.

I'll not be doing my "Uber browser" for my Software Engineering Class. Instead, I'll be making a 3D Gravity Space Simulator. I'll be making the official Site for it : http://www.gummlanparty.net/Programs/Gravity .
Expect to see it up soon, with the rest of the programs I'll be putting up.
Additionally, I'm working on a new GuLP Utility, which incorporates, at it's core a console based interface. That will make it considerably easy for me to port it to other operating systems (i'd like to make a port to linux for it, and i know Joe would be happy about that).
Finally, I plan on making it much less annoying like the old GuLP Messenger was. All incoming messages will just make a sound and make the icon i nthe taskbar flash, rather than making it a popup window. Then you won't have your games interrupted by the program, which I'm sure we can all agree is better.
Well.... off to class.

Why I didn't notice this the first time I read it, I don't know, but Volition has said nothing about having a Version of Red Faction 2 for PC, as it's only being announced for PS2. Although, if history repeats itself, they will later release a PC Version just as they did for RF1.
Hopefully they make it far more robust than RF1 was. The cheating was so out of hand when I stopped playing RF, that all you had to do to cheat was move files around. No programming necessary. Just move a downloadable MOD file from it's directory to the main directory, and BAM... Now you can Fly, or shoot 45,346,377,727 shots per second, or are invincible.

Yup, I called it LAN 9,.. Ya know why… because 3² is gay. That's why. I honestly don't know why I called it that in the first place, but I did for some sick reason or another. 1. Powers of 3 have nothing to do with computers, it would have been more relevant to do 2^3 than the other way around, since 2^3=8. 2. It's longer to say "3 squared" than to say 9, so no one would refer to it as "3 squared" verbally or in writing. 3. No one knows off the top of their head that the ascii code for " ² " is 253.
But I believfe that LAN A us much better. It's fast, has computer meaning and just sounds overall cool.

I started it tonight, and I've learned it's a bit easier to add the details as you go. Check it out, the cafe rebuilt and better than ever.

Thursday, October 4, 2001 : Gotta Restart the Map, dammit!

Of Course, I never make backups of anything, which is why I'm surprised I've never lost all my MIDIs. Anyways, I saved my South Shore Map, and closed the editor. When I reopened the program and tried to open the map, I get a critical error and must restart the program. So, that kinda sucks . . . I hafta restart the map from scratch, and I was practically done with the cafe, and I was working on the vending stand. Luckily it was only 3 days into it, rather than 2 months into it. So the screenshots will stay where they are as a remembrance of the original.

I am currently workin on a Map of South Shore for Red Faction that is projected to be released by the end of November. Hopefully this is an overestimate, but at the latest, it'll be out by Jan 5, which, of course, is LAN Party 7.
I'm also thinking of getting personalized License Plates, but I'm not sure, that'll be next weeks poll.
"PC Load Letter . . . what the fuck does that mean?!?"

Sunday, September 30, 2001 : Red Faction Strategy Guide and Survey of the Week!
|
By Chops
|
|
Well I finally went and bought Red Faction. I had a hellova time though. There were NO copies in ANY Best Buys in the Milwaukee Area (Racine, Milwaukee, and Waukesha). So I was reduced to go to Wal-Mart. Anyway, I've been playing quite a bit, probably 6-10 full games a day or so, and I win about 70% of them,. so I think that I'll be a good source for a strategy guide.
So the Red Faction Multiplayer Strategy guide is now underway! I'm looking forward to finishing it, then opening GummLANParty.net to the public.
A Survey of the Week is beginning, of random questions and stuff. At the end of the week, the results will be posted. I'm working on that tonight.
I'm also workin on the T-shirts.

Monday, September 24, 2001 : Quake 3, UWM Sucks, and Math
|

Today I installed Quake 3. I haven't had it installed since I upgraded to Win2K a few months ago. It's probably been 2 or 3 month ssince I last played Q3A.
So I installed it, and played. Sure enough, I still won, even on a server of like 15. Needless to say, I've impressed myself.
I plan on beginning reading the book "Learn Computer Game Programming with DirectX 7.0" Which I hope will give me a firm understanding of Windows based programming. I mean, the only games I've ever made are for DOS in C++. I Need Visual C++, and since my Fucking Liberal let's Use only Unix school doesn't give me the necessary knowledge to program in Windows, I'm foreced top do it on my own. Isn't that kind of bullshit. It took me 2 years now to realize that UWM has a BAD fuckin' Computer Department. I am a JUNIOR Goddammit, and I don't know Visual C++!!! WTF!!
I Seriously need to go to Full Sail or something. Full Sail is a Game School where they have AN ENTIRE MAJOR Called "Game Design." Too bad it's in Florida and i'm in Wisconsin. I Need to find somewhere that offers Visual C++. It wouln't bother me really if they offered VC++ but Required Unix, but they only OFFER Unix!! fuck that. Even my Web Server is Microsoft. I Like ASP.
And With Going to School, Two Jobs, and a girlfriend (Yes some computer nerds are fortunate enough to have girlfriends), I don't really have time to program on my own.
K, i'm done ranting.
I also sealed my Nerdiness with the books I recieved via mail today. I joined a book club for Math and Sciences, and with the membership you get 5 free books. The books I recieved are as follows: e: The Story of a Number Zero: The biography of a Dangerous Idea The Joy of Pi To Infinity and Beyond And Imaginary Tale: The Story of The Square Root of -1
Ooooooh yeah.

Monday, September 24, 2001 : Slight Remodeling and Newsletters Section Added
|
By Chops

Well I've made the Menu links SUBSTANTIALLY less ugly. I like the new layout, but I'm still thinking how to make it better, cuz I know it's not perfect yet. That's pretty much it for remodeling.
I've also added the Newsletter section for past newsletters sent out. Anything I think is not deemed public is censored out, such as passwords and the like.
I still don't have full-version Red Faction even though it's out(it should be at least). I'm just going to have to play the Multiplayer demo until I get some money to buy it.

It's been a short while since I updated last. I didn't feel like updating it.
Well I updated the Games section. Now you can Vote for the game you want to see played most at LAN Party. Check it out and vote for a game.
I also suggest, if you are new to the site, adding yourself to the Contact List if you are interested in attending the next LAN Party.

As most of you well know, America was attacked on home soil today. Nostradamus predicted that a man with a blue turbin would rise and start the third World War. For you unfortunate souls that have never heard of Nostradamus, he was a guy in the mid part of last millenium (1400s or 1500s) that predicted pretty much everything. He predicted two anti-christs (Napoleon and Hitler) and both World Wars, as well as the assasination of Kennedy (his words were something like 'A Great Leader will be struct down by lightning.' Well it just so happens that the THIRD anti-christ predicted by Nos, happens to be around the year 2000 by a guy with a blue turbin. Well Fuckin-A!!
If this war would be fought in Quake, bin Laden would be done.
On a lighter note, Red Faction comes out in a week.
The date, time and location of LAN Party 7 has not yet been affected.

The Message board is up and active. Go add some messages. There is a new Warcraft 3 gameplay preview. Go get it from Blizzard Entertainment. It's very cool. I went out and bought the Pre-Order of Red Faction the other day. It includes a Copy of the coundtrack in CD. I must say, I am impressed. Some of it is very reminiscent of Duke Nukem 3D. It's very good stuff. Red Faction comes out in the 18th of this month, so I'm pumped. I've been playing lots of the demo version, and I'm getting pretty good. That's it, go to the message board.

Blizzard Announced today that thier new game, World of Warcraft, will be a massivly multiplayer online game set in the Warcraft World, and it takes place 4 years after Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. I hope that you don't have to pay monthly foir it like you do Ultima Online.
Check out the Games section. You can add your own games to the list. Currently have 3 games on the list.
Check out the Links Section. It's really Badass. You can submit your own links and they're dynamically added to the list of Links in the "Submitted Section." Add your site if you have one, or add your favorite site, I'll check it out, and if it's worthy, I'll put it in a REAL section.
I'll be adding the Games Submittion part next, and I'll also begin working on the LAN Party Info Section(not shown on the menu).
There are going to be T-Shirts availaible soon for Super cheap prices (Cost + $4 or so).
NEways, check it out in a week or so.

I've been having problems with Win2K Server. For some reason or another, IIS has been automatically shutting itself down. If anyone has any ideas, send me some mail.
Links will be made next.

Tuesday, August 28, 2001 : Site finally up!!

Hey, y'all. This site is finally up.
You computer nerds will notice that every extension on this site is a .ASP. This ENTIRE Site is database powererd: The Menu, The update that you are reading, the computer in the computers section. I also realize that this makes me kind of susceptable to hackers, but anyoine who'd waste thier time bustin this site, obviously has nothing else to do.
I just recently made the find of a lifetime: all 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas for $30, and with 11 discs, that's less than $3 a disc. Let me tell you, I'm pumped.
k, Bye.
