http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?9,651569,651569#msg-651569Another example of why I have no interest in getting an iPhone. This kind of arbitrariness with regard to what is approved and what is denied is stupid. The only difference between this and dictatorship government is that you can at least choose not to use Apple. ---- Do it for the Lobster

I'd put up with it if I could make a shitload of money.
But I see your point. Hopefully Android/Google can handle this better and I'll enjoy watching the iPhone die.

Yeah, I read that on Engadget yesterday. Fucking retarded.
To add insult to injury, there was a game called "Shake the Baby" in which you had to shake the virtual baby on your iphone until it died. That was approved, at least until there were enough complaints to remove it. Meanwhile, this app was not because the songs it streams *may* contain foul language.
Trent's reasoning for being pissed off is spot on; they sell the same songs on itunes without any problems, why is an app that offers the same content an issue at all?

"Shake the Baby", poor attempt at being clever. The real travesty was it should not have been approved because the app was total crap and unpolished. It was about as complex as "Hello World". I could care less about the content.
As for the shaken baby associations and everyone else whining about it like its going to encourage shaking babies, get a life. Like the iPhone owner demographic (younger, college ed, upper-middle class) is your typical baby shaker.
eeh, I'm still not a believer in Palm yet.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the concept is hilarious. I didn't see any version of it so I can't comment on quality. The point was, if they let through a game, and especially a shitty-looking one, where you kill a baby by shaking it, why is the fact that you MIGHT stream music with naughty language a problem?
Their approval process has no consistency or really any guidelines for approval or denial. That's why so many people are frustrated by it; it's a crapshoot whether or not your app will be approved.
As for Palm... I think they demoed their phone WAY too early. Their steam is already gone at this point, and I have a feeling when the phone is released most people won't care anymore, and those that do won't be all that happy with the device. I hope I'm wrong, but they announced the phone 5 months ago and still have NOTHING on the market. Really sad.
Google still has some hope with the G1, but they need something to make it tip. Right now, they don't have that something. I was actually considering buying on the other day, then it hit me... I've never seen the thing run and I really have no idea what I can do with it. Why would I spend $180 on a phone and $55 a month to use it when all I know about it is that it's a Google phone?
And that's to say nothing about the carrier bundling. I don't care for sprint or t-mobile. ATT is really the only company I'd be willing to get a contract with, and even that is questionable. Google and Palm both should have just released unlocked GSM phones and let people go where they wanted, like Nokia and S/E does with their high-end phones.

I'm hoping this is the future. The telcos aren't going to turn into dump pipes without a fight though. ---- "In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches."

I don't think they've lost all their steam. I still see plenty of people who are excited for the Pre (just like me). I'd prefer to be on Verizon, but if Sprint's network is decent up in the sticks, like I get with Verizon there, I'll be perfectly happy on Sprint's network. ---- Do it for the Lobster

They haven't lost ALL their steam, but they would no doubt have sold a lot more phones if they would have released it within a month. The Pre is badass, and they have some other phones in the works that also use the WebOS, which is awesome too. I just want to know when any of them will be released... As for Lakewood, according to Sprint's coverage map, that's roaming country, so it's hard to say. Thing that sucks is, if you love the phone and hate the service, there's nothing you can do about it, which is why all this carrier bundling is retarded. ---- no fat chicks

http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/05/21/eucalyptus| Eucalyptus has been rejected by Apple, for the absolutely outrageous reason that one of the books you can search for and download from Gutenberg is Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana. Not only can anyone load and read this exact same book on any iPhone using MobileSafari, but it’s also available through other e-book readers already in the App Store such as eReader, Stanza, and Kindle. |

Wonder if it was the same idiot that denied the NIN app for the potential to download obscene material. Either way, retarded. Sadly, I'm now considering buying one ---- no fat chicks

I hardly believe the Kama Sutra book was the real reason it was denied.

Got an inside scoop, or you think Apple's coming out with their eBook reader/trying to push Amazon's Kindle reader?

I would imagine something like that. Why would they want an app available where you can read books for free when Amazon is working so hard right now to be the standard in ebook purchasing? Who knows what kind of deal Amazon and Apple may have?

Looks like ScrollMotion IceBerg was the reason for the denial. Books available for purchase from inside the app, downloaded on the fly. Wouldn't want free books mucking up the business model now would they?
EDIT: scratch that, I guess it's called IceBerg.
