Belling gets a Palm Pre

You might want to download the 1st hour Mark Belling podcast for today 6/22. I think they get posted sometime tonight.

http://www.belling.com/cc-common/podcast.html

The Pre discussion starts sometime around 20mins into the 1st hour.

He got a Pre, the screen somehow cracked after he had it for 3 days. Claims he didnt do anything that would have damaged it. He bought the insurance, and was told it doesn't cover it. Another guy called up and said he's on his 3rd phone.
Yikes. I know when the iphone first came out, they were very quick about replacing units with broken screens, even if it was the users fault (ie, dropped off an end table or whatever). Seems like a bad move by Palm to not be all over hardware problems...

Chops, how's yours holding up?

Mine's just fine. No complaints. 1.0.3 update came out a day or two ago, updated just fine.

Physically, no complaints whatsoever. I take mine to the beach for volleyball even, it's had plenty of sand on it (I'm sure some in the sliding mechanism even), and still ticking like a clock. I've even dropped it a few times, though not yet to concrete, and it's usually in my little leather belt holster dealy.

No complaints.

I've heard stories on precentral.net forums of people who carry their pre around with them in their front pocket with keys and their screens remain unscratched.

The insurance should cover everything, including broken screens, as far as I know. The sales rep even mentioned water damage to me, which is usually on the same boat as a cracked screen.

Yeah I would've thought so too. I've never got that insurance before so I'm not familiar with it.

I gotta laugh, you've had this phone for a week and a half and you've already dropped it a few times? I think I've dropped my phone once and I've had it for 4 years. And it's been sand-free too. Phone manufacturers should hire you to test the durability of their phones.

I do keep my phone in my pocket, which is another reason I haven't jumped in to the smartphones yet. They seem too big and fragile to be in a pocket. A holster is a deal-breaker for me.

Glad yours is still working though. Palm better hope this isn't a widespread problem or they're toast.

Hah, yeah. My phones take a beating. Before I had my treos, I had basically broken or lost every phone I've ever owned. Smashed external LCD (the internal one was okay, so it was still functional), dropped in the toilet (after pissing, no less, the phone still worked), and I've broken two flip phones in half at joint. I make sure to always have insurance on phones now.

I can't count how many times I've dropped my treos, even onto concrete, and those beasts kept on ticking. My most memorable drop was when I fell running down the stairs in my backyard on the way to the wedding rehearsal (if you remember Foo taking a picture of my skinned knee after the rehearsal), my phone flew out of my hip holster (which just just a weak magnetic closure), and onto the concrete. Both of my treos look very tired, scratches, dings, etc. I put my shit through hell and it almost always comes out alive.

I lost my leather hoslter for my Treo about two months ago (I think I left it at a paintball field), and because I was planning on getting the Pre, I didn't buy a new one, and lemme tell you, I can't stand having my phone in my pocket. It feels so much more natural hanging on my hip. I feel the vibrations better when it rings, my pockets remain clear so I can fill them with more shit.

If the Eos is more of a successor of the Centro, that might not be a bad phone for "pocket" use, though tbh, the Pre is nice and small and is, imo, a fine candidate for a pocket phone. Treos, not so much, they're thick, heavy, and overall beastly.

For most people, it's a total waste of money. The insurance costs you like $7 per month, and most people don't break or lose their phones.

But I'm more like my dad. I break everything I own, and prepare for when it gets broken so there's a handy replacement. My dad's dropped cameras in the river, ruined two camcorders each within a few months or so. Myself, I break just about everything I touch.

On a side note, as far as carrying in the pocket, here are some pictures to compare the sizes of the Treo with the Pre (and a Zune, for no reason other than it was handy). Notice the thickness in particular.
