Don't know if any of you subscribe, but a lot of good articles this month

These 2

http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazine/17-07/lbnp_exercise

got me thinking a lot about iPhone apps

And this

is changing my thoughts on the future of Facebook
The first 2 you linked were pretty interesting, but I'm not so sure where you are getting iphone apps from.

And Facebook vs. Google.... I dunno. I mean, yeah, a TON of people use Facebook and it's a great source or REAL personal information that could potentially be flipped into efficient advertising, but my personal opinion of Facebook is that it's shit. The only reason I haven't closed my account is because I still want people to be able to find me, but I'm trying to use that as a springboard to getting people from my Facebook profile (which I hardly ever touch) to my Twitter profile (which I use all the time).

If they can make something happen, great, but so far I'm not impressed. The couple times I've gone to the site with adblocking disabled, NONE of the ads were relevant to me, no matter how many thumbs down I threw at it. They have a ton of personal information on me and my friends and they can't even get targeted ads right... what does that say for their marketing as a whole?

The "5 tools" listed for each article. I thought these other two articles were on the same page: http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazine/17-07/lbnp_nutrition

Nothing new or revolutionary, just different ways to track or modify health behavior using games/contests, mashups, and interesting visualizations. The Weight Watchers thing was interesting. The Nike article talked about the psychology of motivation. The Nike+ device doesn't really track much (speed+distance), but being able to share and compete with others is key. It just got me thinking about what else you could apply that to.

Facebook is run by idiots and is far far less than it could be. I think Google thinks the same thing. But they are the biggest, and that means everything in social networking.

I actually have seen really targeted ads for me. The latest was "Do you like U2? Then check out this new song from [some other band]" which I assume came up because I had mentioned U2 or U2Zoo somewhere because I saw them at Summerfest. Though I never click on any Facebook ads. But how they were talking about branding campaigns was something I hadn't thought of. I'm definitely seen campaigns to announce a new movie or a new product, that's probably were FB makes most of its money.

You are right, they have a ton of information, ridiculous amounts information. I don't think they have the right people working there to know how to use it in a revolutionary way.

Though I'm fascinated that you like Twitter that much. I thought you were being sarcastic when you were praising it after you first started using it. I see no future for Twitter, but who knows. I'm not ADD enough to use it.
Yeah, overall I'm not too impressed with facebook. They're quickly becoming just another myspace rehash. Their site is slow, their redesign is AWFUL, the apps are annoying as fuck and their site really offers me nothing these days. Apparently it has a lot of features now, but thanks to their TERRIBLE UI, I have no idea what they might be or how to go about using them.

Twitter is all in how you use it man. If you're following people who are posting bullshit (like "i love tacos" or other such useless dribble), it sucks. If you follow people who actually have shit to say (like posting information about code, news updates, etc), then it's pretty awesome. More than anything, it's a quick way to keep your finger on the pulse of your friends. I have a really good idea of what people are up to, and most of it is information that they wouldn't bother posting on the forums or facebook (or if they did, I wouldn't look, cause I rarely ever jump on there).

Aside from that, it's also a pretty good source of information and crowdsourcing. Twitter gives you a platform to just jump in and out of conversations, and get your questions answered. For instance, I posted that I saw some roaches in my place and I was documenting what I was doing about it. Some random guy out in Cali wished me luck and I even told him about some tips that I learned that he could use himself. Then when I had Truly Nolen come out to check my place out, I posted about how cool they were about everything and they hit me up via their Twitter account and we had a quick conversation (and I learned they were HQ'd in Tucson, which was kinda cool). It's really all in who you follow and how you use it. If you're subscribing to assface koocher, then you're destined for failure. If you have friends using it and follow people you think are cool (companies and individuals, like the creator or a language or framework or something), it's pretty damn cool. But, it's really hard to explain WHY it's cool unless you use it.

I think the thing I like most is that it's so goddamn simple! I have my client open (I rock Twhirl), I read and post from there and it's dead simple. If I do need to jump on their site, it's fast and simple to use. No bullshit, no waiting and it's pretty slick. Unlike facebook, where I have to sort through all the random peoples' dribble, try to figure out how to hell to get to what I want, maybe wait a few minutes for pictures or something to load.... it's just slow and painful. Twitter, is like a casual conversation with people around you, which is pretty awesome.

But, I digress. Once I burn through my $25 on my tmo pre-paid account, I'll be in iphone country, which'll be pretty sweet I'm sure
