Have you guys seen this yet? I finally want an Android phone. Specifically an Android 2.0 phone. I also feel like Android is finally coming in to its own now, with a good selection of applications and a lot of manufacturers embracing it. Kinda surprised that the self-proclaimed Android fanboi around here hasn't posted this yet too. Stevo, where you at?! ---- no fat chicks

So what happens when you drive outside of a 3G area? Do you still have some type of map? I wonder how well that works with the Edge/1xRTT network? I wonder do you think the people at Google thought of this idea to know if you plan a route off the 3G network to download that data before you leave the 3G network? Yes it maybe the future but cell towers need to catch up to it first.

Yeah, good question. I know just using Google Maps over EDGE is pretty painful, and useless when you have no coverage. I assume Google thought ahead and had it download the whole route ahead of time, but maybe I'm assuming too much... haven't read one way or the other though.

I would hope that they though ahead on that one. But then I might again be smarter then a Multi-Billion Dollar Company and all of it supposedly really really smart nerds.

It's Verizon, they have 3G everywhere.
Really though, they have enough coverage for 99% of the people using the 1st gen phone. Considering Apple/ATT released a phone that can seem to do everything but make phone calls, I think Google will be alright if the Nav app doesn't work in the middle of the desert.

Yes, VZW and VZW only. There are already reports that some features were stripped out (presumably by VZW), like pinch to zoom. I suspect the phone will be pretty great overall, but I'd wait for another Android 2.0 phone that was either unlocked or on a different carrier. Also, a prediction; we won't see any Android phones on ATT for a while, they will instead opt to renew their exclusivity deal with Apple. We'll continue to see amazing phones come out on other networks and ATT will only have the iPhone, which will probably really hurt them in the end. That's just my prediction though, we'll see how 2010 plays out. ---- no fat chicks

Droid doesn't have multitouch. Probably disabled by Google fearing a Apple lawsuit. Milestone is the euro version of the Droid, it has multi-touch pinch zoom. Only a matter of time before the US Droid/Android2 is hacked to allow multitouch? Supposedly VZW has a handful of Android2 phones coming out for the holidays. http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/11/02/verizon-to-aim-for-the-smartphone-crown/

Android 2.0 looks pretty impressive. I still think the Droid itself is pretty damn ugly though. And the fact that it's Moto makes me think it won't be as hot as it could be. I suspect that when others start dropping Android 2.0 phones, the Droid will quickly lose steam. | Droid doesn't have multitouch. Probably disabled by Google fearing a Apple lawsuit. |
That's all speculation. I honestly think that VZW had them disable it. It could be that they feared a lawsuit, but I think it's far more likely that they are just being VZW, the king of crippling otherwise pretty great phones. ---- no fat chicks

Well it understandable to think about how much data it takes to zoom in and move around in Google Earth. You could burn through alot of data with those features. Well we will see in the next few days how it does. ---- STS-128 RTFM!!!

I have to disagree with that. Downloading pictures takes significantly less data than streaming music and video (both of which VZW phones can currently do, hell even my old Treo can stream YouTube), and VZW's network can handle that just fine. A couple of pictures from multitouch aren't going to make a dent in their bandwidth. Or were you being sarcastic? ---- Do it for the Lobster

I understand what you are saying the way I was looking at it is say if it uses the same amount of space per picture about 100K-250K and about 135 pictures a mile. Say you drive a mile at lower 100K that 13.5 megs per mile. Now next week I am driving to Florida 1300 miles times 13.5 megs per mile that's 17.5gigs of data in 20 hours. That one day of the month. My trip will be about 3,500 miles total in about 3 weeks. Right there I am getting close to 50gigs. Thats a lot of data for just a few pics and thats at the lower 100K per pic. Granted my numbers are based of there web version which the phone might have lower quality pictures on it. We will see. ---- STS-128 RTFM!!!

The google maps pictures I look at are only 10k a piece. Or are you talking about the satellite pictures? When I run my GPS on my phone, it's certainly not using Satellite images - that'd be way too hard to read.
I can only imaging the navigation pics are heavily streamlined. Further smart GPS apps zoom in and out automatically based on the type of road you're on (Freeway doesn't need to show every little road, while side streets likely should).
And there's no way that we use 13 gigs of data when travelling to florida.
But still, none of this has anything to do with the multitouch stuff.
