That's ALMOST gameable, though still a little slow to be competitive with FPS games.

This is with Sprint and my Pre, tethered using the USB cable.

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you use the Wifi tethering? Didn't you hack your phone? Also, what kind of throughput are you seeing with pings like that... got a speedtest.net result?

Yeah, the Wifi Tethering seems to be broken. After a webos patch a few months ago, I haven't been able to get the wifi tethering to work (which is frustrating).

I'm pretty sure the error is in the tethering app itself, or something on the tethering app's official website that's not downloading a patch properly. But I've just been using wired tethering since then.

.....Whoa, I just tried again, and it seems the latest WebOS patch seems to fix the download bug, or something. I was getting an error "downloads from vz.aonic.net failed, please check blah blahblah" soemthing like that.

So it might actually be working now, I'm rebooting.

Edit: I'll get a speedtest.net result in a bit.

No luck.

But I found this: http://forum.mytether.net/read.php?2,6943

Apparently, verizon will be adding an official tethering app, which likely means that it can be reverse engineered to be included in the tethering that I've already paid for.

Not too shabby. Those are DSL speeds for a lot of users. Pretty cool stuff.

As an aside, I got a chance to play with some Android phones from Spint over the weekend. I wasn't impressed with Android at all. It felt like a sloppy Chinese iPhone clone. Then I was thinking about alternatives and I remembered WebOS and the fact that you had a Pre. You still loving your phone or wishing you jumped on something else?

Also, you mentioned Verizon. Is the Pre coming out or already available on Verizon now?

I still dig it. I haven't done any development for it, and I haven't tinkered with the OS for a while, but the phone itself is still doing well. It has it's issues: it can get slow, and it lacks some built-in tweaks that you'd expect from the UI (like showing how long a call was in your call log). But that part is pretty much done already by the homebrew scene, which has a program called "PreWare" which is a patch repository for OS hacks. Once the program is installed, you can search for what you need or want, and apply the patch. It's pretty amazing, changing all sorts of things, including installing linux services.

I like it. Would I buy one right now if my contract was up? I dunno. I think I'd wait to see how the Nexus One looks when it comes out (depending on the ETA for that one).

It should be coming out for Verizon. I haven't been following it too closely, so I don't know much for details.
