Earlier today, we had a runaway hit of a post that went viral within a few hours, getting unbelievable pageviews and hundreds of retweets and comments.

The trouble was, it wasn't because of the post's content. Due to some interesting SEO magic, the post was one of the first search results for the term "Facebook login." As a result, hundreds of confused readers bombed us with angry comments about how much they hated the "new Facebook," a.k.a. our Facebook Connect comment login.

Dear visitors from Google. This site is not Facebook. This is a website called ReadWriteWeb that reports on news about Facebook and other Internet services. You can however click here and become a Fan of ReadWriteWeb on Facebook, to receive our updates and learn more about the Internet. To access Facebook right now, click here. For future reference, type "facebook.com" into your browser address bar or enter "facebook" into Google and click on the first result. We recommend that you then save Facebook as a bookmark in your browser.

Man, that's hilarious!

For example, none of the 200 or so confused Facebook users who commented on our earlier post read the post itself, the huge logo at the top of the page, the many links to non-Facebook-related content or the huge, all-bold paragraph about how ReadWriteWeb is not, in fact, some ill-conceived redesign of Facebook.

...And that's really sad. I still can't believe that so many people (maybe even the majority) get to websites exclusively through search engines. Crazies, all of them!

EDIT: from the comments there:

To sum up, a paraphrased quote from George Carlin:

"Think of how stupid the average American is. Then realize: half the people are DUMBER than that."

So sad, but oh so true...

my parents still use yahoo!

For every URL my boss types h t t p : / / w w w . whatever.com

When was the last time you needed to type "http://" 1997?

My project manager is a horrible typer, which explains why it takes him so long to respond to email and make project requirement docs (which are full of misspellings, maybe he's color blind and doesn't see the red underlines). He types out the whole URL too, except he always has a typo. Meanwhile the browser has the thing auto-completed after 2 letters. But he's too busy staring at his keyboard to notice? He's 30yrs old.

Some people just refuse to change or even bother to understand what they're doing.

I use chrome. I get to this forum by typing
ctrl-t (new tab)
g (autocompletes gummlanparty.net/forum.php)
enter
BTW, I thought the RWW post was very good. It's easy to get isolated from how real users interact with your applications. These stories are always a good reminder of reality.

I don't remember EVER typing that part. I'm personally partial to the way Firefox does things; using ctrl+enter for .com, shift+enter for .net and ctrl+shift+enter for .org. It's fucking brilliant! For example:

slashdot (shift+enter)

This assumes it's not in the genius bar of course. Sad thing is, most people don't use the suggestion thing, let along the enter shortcuts. In fact, most people I know have no idea they can even do ctrl+enter, let alone any of the other shortcuts. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone here pipe in saying "that's awesome, I had no idea!" Sadly, only Firefox has the other shortcuts, but even IE does ctrl+enter.

Really though, sit down and watch anyone else use a computer. It's infuriating and you're left wondering how the hell they get anything done. Opening new windows, typing full URLs, clicking and dragging scroll bars when their mouse has a wheel, clicking close buttons and new tab buttons instead of using shortcuts... on and on.

Back to the topic at hand, that's one of the reasons I hate flash sites so much. They brake all normal and accepted conventions and confuse the shit out of users. Scroll bars and select boxes are a good example of things that are normally done wrong on flash sites. I'm iffy on DHTML site menus too since most of them are written very poorly and disappear too easily or stay there too long, but those are something I like to think most users have gotten used to now.

I also think it's important to push the boundaries of design too, otherwise the "user" will never evolve. Sure, something might be tricky for them to figure out now, but in time, they'll all come around (DHTML menus are a good example of that I think). But, it's also important that you don't confuse the user just for the sake of doing so; your design still needs to make sense...

What did you run as a browser in that? Were you just using links or whatever?

using firefox with vimperator extension. http://www.calmar.ws/firefox/

pretty nuts... the vimperator didn't last long. I was mainly tabing around when I didn't use that.

I used vimperator for a bit, just cuz I like Vim, but it just didn't feel right to me.
